Kill Devil Hills is a town located on the Outer Banks, a chain of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina.
Kitty Hawk is north of the town and Nags Head is located directly south of Kill Devil Hills. The town is one of the most heavily populated areas on the barrier island, with many affordable housing options for year-round residents.
Kill Devil Hills is home to the site of the Wright brother’s first controlled, powered airplane flight which occurred on December 17, 1903. This historic flight is commemorated by the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which is located at milepost 7 in the coastal town.
At the time of the brother’s flight, the town didn’t exist, having received its municipal charter in 1953. Because of this, history books will tell you that the two brothers made their historic flight in Kitty Hawk, NC… which is not incorrect because the area was part of Kitty Hawk at the time!
